Will Home Insurance Cover a Rock Thrown into Your Window

Whether it happened as an accident or was the result of an act of vandalism, having a rock hit your home’s window can be very scary. It is the type of accident or incident you cannot prevent. However, home insurance may cover the damage in some situations. That could help you get the repairs you need to make your home secure again.

Rock Throwing Coverage
If someone that does not live in your home threw the rock at your home, the police and your home insurance agent may determine that this is an act of vandalism. For example, it could be a neighborhood kid that tossed the rock at your home. Modern house

If you or someone living in your home tossed the rock at the house, it may not be an act of vandalism. You may not have coverage for this type of loss. For example, if your son or daughter who lives with you did it because he or she was angry, your home insurance may not cover this loss. It’s best to speak to your agent about this type of situation to determine if coverage is available.

Consider Your Deductible
Another key factor to think about is your deductible. Let’s say the big front window at your home suffered the damage. The window shattered as a result of the rock. You should contact your home insurance agent to inquire about coverage. He or she will then request a quote for the repairs. If the repair costs are higher than your deductible, you can file a claim. If they are not, though, you may find filing a claim is not possible.

Here is an example. If your home insurance deductible is $500, but it only costs $300 for a new window, your home insurance company would not pay anything. You are responsible for the first $500 worth of damage. If the cost is $600, you could file a claim. However, the insurance company may cover just $100 of the cost. In this case, you may not find it beneficial to file the claim if it means your rates could go up later. You might simply pay for the repairs out of your own pockets.

Every situation is unique. The terms of your policy play the biggest role in determining if that rock’s damage has coverage. Be sure to speak to your agent about acts of violence. It may also be necessary to file a report with the police to document the incident.
