Common Auto Insurance Questions
Why do You Need Auto Insurance?
Car insurance is designed to help drivers afford the costs that arise following unexpected, unavoidable accidents involving their vehicles. These accidents don’t just have to be wrecks; they might be vehicle fires, theft, vandalism or severe weather. Any of these hazards might lead to significant recovery costs, not to mention legal consequences.
Rather than worrying about how you’ll pay to pick up the pieces, you can find your source of assistance in your auto insurance policy. Your plan will provide financial aid to help you pay accident costs, and you won’t face a monetary loss just because you experienced a problem you didn’t expect.
What Does Auto Insurance Cover?
All auto insurance policies can offer a diversity of benefits including:
- Liability insurance: When an accident is deemed your fault, this coverage help you pay for the damage you do to others (such as other drivers) who weren’t in the car with you.
- Bodily injury liability coverage: This plan pays for third-party medical bills and sometimes for death benefits.
- Property damage liability coverage: This pays for damage to the other party’s property.
- Collision insurance: This covers damage to your own vehicle that you sustained in a wreck.
- Comprehensive insurance: This coverage pays for damage from non-accident mishaps, such as weather damage, fires, theft, vandalism or similar accidents.
- Medical payments coverage/Personal Injury Protection: If you get hurt in an accident, this coverage can pay for your medical bills. It sometimes will cover other losses, like lost income.
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist insurance: This insures you against damage caused by someone else who doesn’t have appropriate liability coverage. If you are the victim of a hit-and-run, for example, then this coverage can pay for your car’s damage.
To further customize your benefits, you can also enroll in coverage like:
- Roadside assistance
- Rental car reimbursement
- Custom parts coverage
- Replacement cost vehicle coverage
- Vanishing deductibles
- Gap insurance
What Auto Insurance is Required?
By law, all North Carolina drivers are required to have auto insurance of at least the following limits:
- $30,000 bodily injury liability coverage per person
- $60,000 bodily injury liability coverage per accident
- $25,000 property damage liability coverage per accident
- $30,000 uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage per person
- $60,000 uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage per accident
- $25,000 uninsured motorist property damage coverage per accident
It is recommended that you carry higher limits than the minimum coverage. If you do carry higher liability limits, however, you are required to carry underinsured motorist (UIM) bodily injury coverage.
If you finance your vehicle, then you might need collision, comprehensive or gap insurance as required by your lender.
